The Indiana Wesleyan University women’s soccer team defeated the Mt. Vernon Nazarene Cougars by a score of 2-0 on Oct. 19 for Homecoming Saturday. The win extends the Wildcats win streak to 6 games and an overall record of 11-2-2.
Freshman forward Katelyn VanderArk scored the first goal in the 21st minute.
“It ended up being a bit of an overlap. The defender played me through, and then I beat her to the end line with speed. I cut back, and the goalie was down, so I shot it over her,” VanderArk said.
VanderArk said the team felt the first score would come early in the game.
“We had a lot of shots, and we really just wanted to get that first score to set the tone,” VanderArk said.
Junior midfielder Madelyn Welker came in as a substitute and scored the second goal of the game in the 37th minute on an assist by VanderArk. The sequence was similar to the one where VanderArk scored.
“This time, it was more of a pass, and Maddie was right there in the perfect spot. There was a little drop past the goalie, and then she finished,” Welker said.
Sophomore forward Alyssa Hamann, who has played the second most minutes on the team with 1,157, said the team is peaking at the right time of the season.
“We’re super excited. It’s kind of been a process this whole year trying to figure out what everyone’s role is. It’s fun to see the fruition of everything when you lay it on the line every game,” Hamann said.
IWU women’s soccer will look to continue their win streak this Saturday when they take on the Huntington Foresters on Senior Day at 2 p.m.
“It’ll be super cool to celebrate the girls that have laid the foundation for what our program is. I think it’ll bring an added motivation and drive to play and win,” Hamann said.
The Wildcats currently sit at the top of the Crossroads League with zero losses in the regular conference season.
