The Indiana Wesleyan University business department puts on a Launch and Learn event about every month. For the month of November, Dr. Shawn Matter was the guest speaker.
Dr. Matter is a licensed attorney in Indiana and a professor of business law at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Dr. Matter spoke on how to avoid legal pitfalls when it comes to creating a business. The event was filled with tons of information about different kinds of entities as well as why different entities are better for some things than others.
Dr. Jen Bennett was the lead organizer for the Launch and Learn event on Tuesday.
“Basically what it is, is we bring in a speaker once a month that comes and shares with students. It doesn’t have to be just entrepreneurship students. It can be any student on campus, in any discipline that wants to learn more about entrepreneurship, maybe starting their own business, stuff like that,” Bennett said.
The event attracts people from multiple different majors around campus.
Ian Bailey is a marketing major, but said he is also interested in entrepreneurship. He said he learned a lot from the event.
“I would say from today to just cover all your bases,” Bailey said.
In Dr. Matter’s talk, he emphasized certain things in business that, when gone unnoticed, could be troublesome.
Eric Entrekin, another student that attended the event, said he knew that he would be able to gain information here that would give him an edge in the business world.
“(I wanted to come for) the opportunity to learn about the different business entities, and to soak up every opportunity from the business division. The free lunch was also enticing.”
Dr. Bennett looks to hold the next Launch and Learn Event in January.
