Student parking extended in Kem/Scripture lot

This past Wednesday, Jan. 19, Director of Campus Police, Kyle Beal, sent out an email to the university about a big parking change on campus.

This change affects lots 14 and 17 which are the Maxwell parking lot and the Kem and Scripture Hall lot. Staff parking is now the strip along Beard Art Center and everything in the front of Maxwell. Everything else in the back of Maxwell is for students.

Kyle Beal, director of campus police, said that there were a lot of factors going into this decision with Mark DeMichael and Matt Thompson.

“We thought it was a good plan. There wasn’t going to be much loss to the employees, but it would be more gain to the students,” Beal said.

Beal also said that it would affect some faculty spots.

“They might just have to walk a little bit further. It’s not as convenient as parking right in front of the door you might want to go into, or the building that you want to go into, but it’s not that much for the walk,” Beal said.

Beal also said that this is the first year since the COVID-19 pandemic that Carmin, Evans, Kem and Scripture have students living there and are sharing a lot.

To this date there are 4,703 parking spots on campus.

Because of this, Beal said that there are plenty of spots open to students to park, they just might not be convenient.

In an email that Beal sent to the student body, he stated that until the 2025-2026 school year, the parking spots will still be painted yellow.

Beal said that if a student had a question, they should feel free to reach out to him at Kyle.Beal@indwes.edu.

Benjamin Eckert, a sophomore student from Kem Hall, said, “I feel like the extended parking definitely helps out a lot. I think it shorts the distance everyone has to walk to get to the buildings, and it also just helps parking all the way around campus, because people from all the other dorms don’t have to worry about people from Kem and Scripture parking in their lots because we don’t have enough spots open here.”

Eckert also said that this parking should have been initiated a long time ago.

Eckert said that he knows a lot of people that got parking tickets in this lot before campus police made the changes.

Faith Brown, a student that lives in Scripture Hall, had some thoughts about the parking changes too.
“I don’t think that it matters that much, because people park there anyways,” Brown said.

Brown also said she thought the new parking lot should have been initiated a long time ago as she knows people who have gotten a ticket in this lot before the change.
