Some people believe in superstition or weird coincidences like the Indiana Wesleyan University’s marching band who has never played at a losing game.
“We launched the marching Wildcats fall of 2021, and so we have played every home football game that has occurred, except for the ones that occur the week of Thanksgiving,” said director of athletic bands Briana Blankenship.
Every home game that the marching band has played the football team has won their game, which means seniors in the band have not seen the wildcats lose.
“This year’s seniors have been with us since the beginning, and they have never played for a football game where the Wildcats have lost, so the marching band as a whole has never experienced a loss yet,” said Blankenship.
Since 2021 and up to their most recent 2024 season, the Wildcats have lost a total of seven games all of which were away.
“It’s always a good feeling going into football games, because there’s not a lot of like, ‘Oh, are we going to lose?’ But then it’s also like, we can just enjoy the game, but at the same time, there’s not as much competition, because it’s like, oh, we’re just going to win,” said drum major Karena Collier.
While there might not be an exact correlation between a live band playing and winning, some have tried to piece together why this happens.
“It’s this extra boost that is, like, sort of like when you’re working out and you put on that one tune to be able to, like, pump yourself up, to hit your PR as you’re going,” said trumpet player Corban Hall.
This Saturday Dec 7 at noon the number three ranked Wildcat’s face off against the number nine ranked Benedictine College.
“I do think it’s going to be one of probably the toughest battles the football team has faced in our stadium, but I have no doubts that the Marching Wildcats can help cheer our guys on to another victory,” said Blankenship.
Students and the marching band will be in the stadium cheering on the Wildcats as they head into the quarterfinals and hopefully the NAIA championship.
