SGA Elections Happening on Tuesday

Indiana Wesleyan University students will have the opportunity to vote in the upcoming Student Government Association election on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Students can vote for next year’s president and vice president as well as cabinet members and academic representatives.

SGA officials work alongside IWU’s administration and faculty. Joshua Cartwright, current SGA Vice President and presidential candidate, said SGA’s main role is to get students to engage in community on campus and make sure student voices are heard.

As vice president, Cartwright said he sits on a committee that allows him to work directly with faculty to create the best events and opportunities for students.

“The main goal of committees such as that is essentially to make students feel as though this community is a place where they are welcome and that they are heard and that they are valued,” Cartwright said.

SGA also works behind the scenes when policy changes happen across campus. Abbie Beliles, vice presidential candidate, said SGA is the first to hear about changes and can voice the opinions of students.

“SGA is important because it is the bridge between students and faculty and administration,” Beliles said. “Those are three parts that are essential to making the campus run.”

The bridge SGA creates between students and faculty allows students to try to change things happening on campus. Gabe Hooper, presidential candidate, said he hopes students know they can bring any concerns they have to SGA.

“So I would encourage anybody who, if you have opinions about the school and you have things you would like to see change, or things that you love and you want to keep happening, you should bring that to SGA,” Hooper said.

A campus wide email will be sent on Tuesday that will show students how to vote. A table will also be set up in the Barnes Student Center where a QR code will be available.

“Students should go out and vote on Tuesday because their vote does matter,” Cartwright said. “It does matter who is sitting in these rooms with these wonderful faculty.”
