With this school year coming to a close, the class of 2029 will be here soon.
IWU’s administration has been preparing departments for years to help welcome in a new group of students every year. They host many events to make their transition on to campus as smooth as possible
With the help of departments like Registration and Academic Servicers (RAS) and Admissions, administration hosts Admitted Students Weekend every year in March to help bring incoming students into the life of an average student.
Admissions counselor Ashton McKuras helped with this event and brought insight into this day.
“I think that it is like almost day one of seeing what your college experience can be and who you’re gonna be going to class with over the next four years. It’s just a day where you feel celebrated,” McKuras said.
McKuras said he enjoys being an admissions counselor.
“I personally just love meeting new people and just helping to support them,” McKuras said.
RAS advisor Ryan Howell also said administration supports them with new students every year.
“I think they are giving us the tools to help students strive and giving us the flexibility and the resources that we need to make sure that every student is able to succeed on this campus,” Howell said.
He also said RAS is a good space for students to take a break.
“They should feel like this is a safe place, that this is their home, that we want this to be a space where they can come and not just meet with their advisor but hang out with their friends,” Howell said. “They possibly do brain break stuff. Have funny snacks. We are just trying to have a space for students to hang out.”
Freshman Kaylynn Miller said she attended Admitted Students Weekend last year and how the events run by administration set her up for success here at IWU.
“I felt like everything was explained really well and everyone felt really welcomed, which I think is a lot of the point of the weekend,” Miller said.
Miller said she had some advice for the incoming class of 2029.
“Just know that you’re there for a good time. Like don’t put pressure on yourself to find a roommate,” Miller said. “You might and you might not, but you’re there just to meet people, you’re there to get connected with the university that you’re gonna be calling home for the next four years, et cetera. Just enjoy your time.”
