The Indiana Wesleyan University baseball team is working hard to find their rhythm this season.
From the very beginning of the season, the team had to learn how to transition after losing their head coach. Co-interim head coaches, Steve Friend and Jeff Pawlik, had to take over and have been working to get the team into a consistent rhythm.
Pawlik said that despite the challenges at the beginning of the year, the team is beginning to come together and find confidence.
“I think we’re starting to find our rhythm now and that’s the whole thing about the game, is you just got to peak at the right time,” Pawlik said. “So I think that’s starting to happen.”
To get the team where they need to be, Darien Pugh, a senior on the team, said that they often work on possible game situations during practice.
“A lot of what coaches try to get us to do is working on in-game situations, so a game-like scenario is what they call it,” Pugh said. “So just practicing so we’re not unprepared or haven’t seen anything before by the time we get to the game.”
Learning to work together is something the team has also been working on throughout the season.
Andrew Sinish, a sophomore on the team, said that the team has had to work on trusting each other and remembering that they aren’t just there for themselves.
“You’re performing more for your teammates and not just for yourself, and I think that is where unity comes in, and that’s when you start to find your stride,” Sinish said.
For the remainder of the season, Sinish said the goal is to continue playing their best baseball. He said they hope to win the conference tournament and get a bid for the World Series.
The baseball team’s record is 19-9 so far this season, with a 14-6 conference record. Their next game is against Grace on April 4.
