BSU skates to finals

The Black Student Union (BSU) hosted a skating night in Luckey Arena on Wednesday.

The skate night happened the week before finals, which provided students with a much-needed break.

“We thought it would be a fun event and a really cool way to wrap up the semester, give people a break from studying or just like a stress reliever,” Zina Teague said.

Teague is the Director of Student Engagement and BSU’s advisor.

The event had a $2 entrance fee and had several IWU students in attendance.

“It just makes it very fun for everyone. College students like having a break and a de-stress, especially because it’s almost finals. So, events like these are fun,” Faith Clayton said.

Clayton is set to be a part of the BSU team next year.

Events at IWU like the skate night are a great way to help students connect.

“I think it definitely helps us socialize a little bit better and it’s a good opportunity to not only meet new people, but to get closer to the people that we already have,” attendee Elizabeth Escalante said. “And I think that whenever we do have events like this, it’s just a fun opportunity to connect better.”

BSU tries to not only have fun events but also share it with the rest of the IWU community.

“Our goal is just basically we want to be able to have a good time, help our students of color feel welcome on campus but also realize that we have greater community that we’re part of and so that’s why events like this it’s open to everyone it’s not just for black students,” Teague said.

The events that BSU hosts also create a fun way to educate and communicate with students.

“I think we facilitate a lot of communication. And we’re a dominant means of doing so on campus.” BSU’s Vice President Amani Johnson said. “And we do a good job at educating our culture and our humanity but also still making it fun and good.”
