IWU small groups are growing and impacting students

The Spiritual Formation Office (SFO) at Indiana Wesleyan launched small groups this past September.

The SFO reported that 171 small groups met on September 24, which accounts for around 1,365 students, or 20% of IWU’s campus. This number has grown significantly from last year.

CJ Kelley, Student Body Chaplain of Prayer and small group leader for the Black Student Union, said that small groups are extremely important for many reasons. Specifically, he mentioned the deeper connection that comes from being in a smaller, tight-knit community.

“With having a small group, they hold you accountable,” Kelley said.

He also highlighted the biblical connection, pointing out that Jesus had a small group.

The benefits aren’t only for those participating in small groups.

Ali Denton leads a small group dedicated to sharing the gospel.

“In leading my group, I have learned about shepherding people well, especially as it relates to holding each other accountable,” Denton said.

Denton also said that small groups have given her the chance to hear others’ stories a little more and get to dive deeper into the “why” behind why people are following the Lord.

Jaxson Gould, a senior at IWU, said small groups have influenced his life.

“It’s allowed me to build friendships and relationships within the group,” Gould said. “I think the biggest benefit is just a smaller, closer space where there is opportunity for vulnerability and growth with the Lord.”

Gould said that over his years at IWU, he’s learned a great deal about himself through participating in small groups.

This year, a new focus for small groups is community engagement.

Small groups are required to serve at least one day throughout the semester, highlighting the university’s commitment to stewarding their presence well among the greater Marion community.

Many small groups are offered on campus at IWU. These groups vary in many ways, including topic, meeting time and other factors. To join a small group, an students connect with their Hall Chaplain, RA or member of the SFO.
