The No. 6-ranked Indiana Wesleyans women’s soccer team capped off the regular season with a win against Bethel and took down Mount Vernon in the opening round of the Crossroads League Tournament.
The women’s soccer team is truly a special environment. The team creates a welcoming atmosphere that is seen on and off the field. Freshman forward Avery Williams and junior goalkeeper Avery Sluss talked highly about the community on the team and how Jesus is the center of it.
“The community on the women’s soccer team is awesome. It is one of the reasons I came here. The love that they have for Christ and for others is contagious. When I first came here, I knew I had to come because it was like family. Everyone is so uniquely themselves and each day you look forward to going to practice. We all have a lot of fun together,” Williams said.
On the sidelines, the girls cheer each other on to hype them up and stay motivated.
“What we do to stay motivated is focusing on the cross and it takes over all the stress, so just playing for each other and playing for Christ is what we focus on,” Sluss said.

This is the Wildcats first season under new head coach Hannah Shay.
“What she brings into the table has been so good to bring us all together and we have all bonded so well on the team,” Sluss said.
The women’s soccer team has poured a lot of hard work into this season.
“Pre-season was awesome. I was really excited about how much energy the team brought. They were really encouraging to each other and me being a new coach here. The way they really play for each other was evident from day one,” Coach Shay said.
Shay said the pre-season is so important to building the connections before the season starts.
“My favorite part from this season was seeing the way the girls love each other and that we are all able to have fun together and love getting better at what they are doing, the upper classmen also lead really well with work ethic and speaking up when someone needs a voice,” Shay said.
The Wildcats next game will be at home against No. 16 Grace College on Saturday, November 8, at 5 pm.
