IWU INTRODUCES INTRAMURAL OUTDOOR PICKLEBALL

Indiana Wesleyan University is expanding its intramural programs this semester.

The intramurals will now include outdoor pickleball in the fall. The university recently opened brand-new outdoor pickleball courts.

“Pickleball provides a community on top of the sport. It doesn’t matter your age, gender, or athletic background; everyone is welcome on the court.” sophomore Joe Peter said.

The sport is gaining popularity because it is beginner-friendly and social. Campus recognized the excitement behind the winter indoor pickleball league and decided to expand into the fall and offer an outdoor league as well.

There are two leagues for intramural pickleball: college and pro. The college league is for beginners and intermediate level players. The pro league is for more advanced pickleball players.

Both leagues are co-ed and doubles. Currently, there are 26 teams in the college league and 14 in the pro league.

All Pickleball games are bring-your-own equipment. However, some paddles will be available to borrow at the matches. The league will provide balls.

Dede Parsons explained that anyone can be a referee. If the intermural league hires you, you can become a referee for any intermural sport.

“It’s a great Job for anyone who is passionate about sports,” Parsons said.

If you missed the deadline for outdoor intramural pickleball this semester, there will be an indoor pickleball league in the intramural gyms in the winter.
