A string of car break ins have been happening recently on campus and in the Grant County
community. With this, many students are wondering about safety on campus.
Noelle Smith, a student on campus said, “some of my friends who live in scripture said they saw
someone breaking into cars at six in the morning.”
This is not the first time that this situation has happened. Kyle Beal, the director of campus
police said, “We have had car break ins happen before on campus in the past about three years
ago we had a string of car break ins with cars being left unlocked. We found who was
responsible for that and it was some local people, but we caught them. We also had some people
three years ago go around stealing catalytic converters.”
Kyle Beal said, “At the beginning of the month we started getting reports about cars being
broken into. Most of the cars were unlocked. They had stuff missing from the cars. There was
one car stolen, because the guy left the keys in his car. Someone drove it somewhere, but the
police were able to use resources and locate it in Howard county.”
Indiana Wesleyan is taking all the precautions they can to help prevent this situation from
growing.
Kyle Beal sent out an email right away about the situations happening and as a reminder that we
also take our own precautions of locking our car doors.
If there is a situation where a car is broken into it is important that you report it right away. Beal
said, “the best thing to do is call campus police directly at (765)-677-4911 and that gets answered
24 hours a day.”
As part of our responsibility on campus as well we can take precautions for ourselves as well.
Angela Haley who is a campus police said, “make sure you lock your car when leaving it and
taking out anything that might be of value. Don’t leave your keys in your car, take them with
you. We are not the only ones on campus, we have a lot of people from the outside on our
campus too, not just IWU. “
When there are larger events going on IWU’s campus police do have more people on duty
because there are a larger mass of people going on. Haley said, “it depends on the event, but
usually around four or five officers.”
Indiana Wesleyan’s campus police are always on duty and prepared. The best thing you can do to
take precaution is to lock your car and take anything out that is valuable.
