Indiana Wesleyan University has recently added a new organization on campus called the Asian Student Organization thanks to a few students of Asian descent.
ASO is an organization created to welcome diversity and different cultures to Indiana Wesleyan University.
Tin Par, president of ASO, decided to create the organization.
“My surroundings played an important role in inspiring me to start ASO,” Par said. “(So did) the Bible verse Revelation 7:9 which says, ‘After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.’”
Par said she had a goal of creating a place for Asian students to feel a sense of community, as well as a way of welcoming students from diverse backgrounds and cultures of Asian descent.
Par also said she wants to make the school an even more welcoming place not just for Asians but for all races and ethnicities and said that we are all one body in Christ.
ASO Secretary Xu Yang said the Asian Student Organization will be beneficial for students of all cultures.
“We want to share Asian cultures and let other students know about them. So, culture difference will not be such a big topic for students,” Xu said.
Xu said she appreciates other ethnic groups on campus such as the Black Student Union (BSU).
“We want to make this place (Indiana Wesleyan University) more diverse since we already have other organizations like BSU,” Xu said.
Moses Liana said being a member of the Asian Student Organization helps him feel a sense of home at IWU.
“As a member I have definitely felt like I am part of a community of like minded individuals who know and understand the vast range of cultural differences we have in Asia,” Liana said.
