The Psychology Club is working towards helping those who struggle with mental health.
During the spring of 2024, the idea was pitched to students and faculty to bring the Psychology Club back to campus. This might be the club’s first full year, but members said they hope to become a place where mental health can be freely talked about.
Sam Wilson, the president of Psychology Club, said the club is open to anybody, no matter the major.
“We like to talk about mental health and mental well-being and also just kind of break the stigma around mental health, and so having these clubs open to anyone offers an opportunity for people to learn more about mental health and maybe learn more about themselves or others and just how to love others well,” Wilson said.
Wilson said the club typically has meetings once or twice a month. She also said they aim to have events at least once or twice a semester.
Emma Batdorff, the treasurer and secretary, said the club will typically try to do events such as game nights and de-stress nights.
“I think it’s a group that advocates well for mental health and standing up for yourself and like in the midst of other people as well and like understanding that we’re in that together. And I think it’s just a cool shout out to like all that psychology has to teach you about yourself and the world around you,” Batdorff said. “So even when we’re just hanging out and doing fun stuff like that, it’s a cool way to involve just meeting with other people and just doing things that are good for us mentally and physically.”
While the club might be small, the conversations can be big. Jared Wiltheiss, the vice president, said during meetings the club is open to talking about anything from articles to personal issues. He said they just try to work together and learn as much as they can.
“I think when you have people that are striving for the same goals, it pushes you to excel in whatever you want to learn or study,” Wiltheiss said.
The Psychology Club is currently looking for a president, vice president, and secretary for the spring of 2026.
