The Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball team recently finished their season in the Round of 16 with an overall record of 19-14, but this year, it was more than just the numbers.
Head coach Ethan Whaley said the team’s identity was clear all season.
“The thing our staff enjoyed most about our team this year was the joy the players brought to everything that our team did,” Whaley said. “They played with joy on the court, but off the court they always found ways to encourage the people around them.”
Standout freshman forward Ayla Krygier, who led the team in scoring this season, highlighted the bond the team created.
“What I liked most about this team was the unity and togetherness we had,” Krygier said. “We had many ups and downs throughout the season, but we had each other through it all.”
That connection translated onto the court as well.
“Everyone brought joy to one another every single day and that’s what made it easier to fight for the person next to us,” Krygier added.
Senior guard Emily Mattingly echoed a similar sentiment.
“What I liked most about our team this year was the resilience and the way we stayed connected through everything,” Mattingly said. “No matter the ups and downs of the season, we continued to compete hard and support each other.”
While the season didn’t end exactly how they wanted it to, all of them agreed that consistency would be a key part that needs improvement for next year.
“When we think of areas our team needs to improve for next year, the simple answer is to let our younger players develop,” Whaley said. “At times it was evident on the court with execution and turnovers.”
Both players agreed that maintaining a high level of play for a full game will be crucial moving forward.
“I think for next year, we need to improve our consistency as a whole, especially on the defensive end and taking care of the ball,” Krygier said.
Mattingly recognizes what will be asked of her as a senior leader next year.
“Focusing on execution, limiting turnovers, and staying disciplined for all four quarters will help take us to the next level,” Mattingly said.
The Wildcats are reloaded and have learned their lesson from this season, taking that youthful experience and heading into next season with a lot of promise, highlighted by a loaded freshman class.
