The Spiritual Formation Office (SFO) announced in chapel that they are looking for students to get involved in the community of Marion.
SFO Director of Community Collaborations & Engagement Keenan Davis said being a native of Marion has fueled his passion for trying to revive Marion through IWU.
“The main focus of my job is to be the bridge between the community of Marion and the campus of Indiana Wesleyan,” Davis said. “Having students being open and desiring to get out and help those in need gives me all the hope in the world.”
Community Engagement administrative assistant Sarah Bussen said one of the goals of this initiative is to provide students with an opportunity to grow in their faith through service to others.
“After the chapel service that Keenan and I spoke at a couple of weeks ago, I was so encouraged to see the outpouring of students who were looking for a way to get involved,” Bussen said. “I was surprised that so many had a calling to help and were willing to give their own time, and that healed a part of my heart.”
The SFO created the community engagement roles and positions last year.
Drew McFarlane, a senior social work major at IWU, said the school has so many resources and hope to give to those around us, and Marion would be a great place to start.
“Being stuck in classes in our own little spheres of influence and bubble of comfort we’ve made for ourselves, we have little knowledge of true reality for the majority of those in the U.S.,” McFarlane said. “We are doing ourselves a disservice to not go out in the community and help. For me, it’s encouraging to see people ‘pop’ their bubble intentionally to actually get their hands dirty in the work of the Gospel.”
