Club Sports at IWU

Indiana Wesleyan University introduced many new competitive club teams on campus this year. These teams provide students with the opportunity to compete against other colleges while participating in the sports they enjoy.

Sophomore Ryan Hornbeck, a member of the men’s soccer club team, said the team offers students the chance to play soccer competitively without the commitment of varsity sports.

“It’s great to have a place where students can compete against other schools but without the pressure of varsity,” Hornbeck said. “We’ve had a solid start, and it’s been fun getting to know the team. We’re really working on our chemistry and getting better every game.”

Hornbeck also said the team has a desire to grow both on the field and off the field.

“We’re looking to recruit more players and build something special here at IWU. The competition has been tough, but we’re determined to keep improving,” Hornbeck said.

The men’s volleyball team is also a new club team introduced on campus. Sophomore Benjamin Pavy is on the team this year and enjoys the ability to balance competition and enjoyment.

“I’ve always enjoyed volleyball, and this club allows us to compete at a high level while still focusing on academics,” Pavy said. “It’s great to go up against other schools and challenge ourselves.”

Pavy also said there has been a lot of growth in interest in men’s volleyball recently, especially as a sport on campus.

“Volleyball is growing in popularity, and I think having this competitive team shows that there’s a real interest here. We’re excited to see where it goes,” Pavy said.

The trap shooting team is a new coed club for students. William Clark, a member of the team, said he is excited about representing IWU in competitions.

“Trap shooting has been a passion of mine, and now we’re competing against other colleges, which makes it even more exciting,” Clark said. “We’re improving as a team and really enjoying the challenge.”

Clark also said the club has attracted a variety of students with different levels of experience.

“Some of our members are newer to trap shooting, but they’re picking it up quickly. It’s great to see everyone coming together and learning as a team,” Clark said.

Pavy said he thinks the creation of these new club teams will foster community and provide students with more ways to compete outside of varsity sports at IWU.
