Running for donuts

Indiana Wesleyan University’s Homecoming Donut Run/Walk 5K took place on Saturday, October 19, kicking off the final day of the weekend celebration.

Participants had the option of either running or walking the entire 5K, which took a route around the whole campus. Regardless of their choice, each participant would receive two donut holes for each mile, and a medal upon completion of the 5K.

Ashley Marcum worked at the registration table Saturday morning. She explained the significant difference in registration between this year’s race and previous years.

“We had about 260-something last night, and today we had about 20 register. So we have about 280 people here,” Marcum said.

Marcum estimated that around 150 of the participants were IWU students.

“This is bigger than last year. I think last year we were probably around 200. And so we have almost 100 more people here today,” Marcum said

Freshman Kaleb Randall won the 5K, with a time of 18 minutes and 49 seconds. Randall is a member of the IWU Running Club.

“I love the theme,” Randall said. “I think that was really cool with the donuts and everything. The course wasn’t a bad course. It was nice and flat, so that was nice.”

Kate Thompson also participated in the 5K. Thompson ran the whole course and finished with a time of about 28 minutes.

“It was so fun. I think the energy was really great,” Thompson said. “And the community is really excited, you can tell.”

The donut theme was a new addition to the race, and participants seemed to enjoy it.

“I think it’s a creative idea with the donuts as well, like, it’s kind of weird to think of running and donuts, but at the same time it makes it really unique,” Thompson said.

The theme for the 5K was part of a greater effort to get more current IWU students engaged in Homecoming festivities. With the higher number of participants in this year’s race, it appears to have been a success.
