The sixth year of IWU’s annual Treat Night passed with families visiting campus for a night of trick-or-treating.
“It’s just an opportunity for families and Marion to just come around and interact with Indiana Wesleyan as a whole,” Faith Brown said.
Treat Night is student-led with volunteers. Brown, an RA at Scripture Hall, was the coordinator for her hall.
“(Students) do the planning, the choosing of the decorations, getting volunteers and then they work with the Director of Housing and the Graduate Assistants for housing to get all that planned out,” Hodson Hall Resident Director Jeremy Gross said.
Preparing for the night, students decorate and organize activities on top of handing out candy.
“We’re gonna welcome them in, invite them into our space and make sure they’re all having a good time,”Kaylynn Miller said.
Miller, a coordinator for Evans Hall, hopes more students get involved in community outreach.
“By connecting with the people of Marion, you’re connecting with someone who just has a different perspective on life,” Miller said.
Dorm Halls followed movie themes while other stops, such as Campus Police, joined with their own themes.
“I’m hoping that we can get more people involved, just get more community involvement,” Brown said.
Through Treat Night, students are able to directly serve the Marion community.
“We’re not just on the IWU bubble, the IWU islands here in Marion,” Miller said. “We’re also a part of the town, and we’re able to really connect with those community members.”
Staff at IWU hope to break fears students may have when dealing with the Marion community.
“I think a lot of students have stigma attached to Marion, which most of those things are just hearsay, not true things,” Gross said.
Treat Night is part of this initiative.
“I think it’s a fun way for us to get involved in the community,” Brown said.
Continuing to provide a safe and engaging atmosphere for Halloween, Treat Night brings the community to Indiana Wesleyan University.
