Indiana Wesleyan University’s Science Club and Math Club collaborated to host a “Deck the Halls” event in Ott Hall of Sciences and Nursing on Wednesday evening. Students, faculty and community members were invited to come and create their own Christmas wreaths.
Dr. Jennifer Noseworthy and Alliance Gardens provided the materials to make the wreaths, according to Bree Smith, Science Club Junior President and Senior Secretary.
“Yesterday, her team went out and just collected them on campus, like fallen ones, low-hanging ones, clipped them, put them in trash bags, and we just put them in the back of the room,” Smith said. “And then Lisa Cooper and student workers made all of the bows this week. To be exact, they made 101.”
The Deck the Halls event has been growing each year.
“I was brainstorming with the Science Club members at the time about different event ideas, and I brought this one up,” Noseworthy said. “We did that two years ago, and it went really well. And so we thought, let’s do it again.”
Part of the reason for the growth was because of the partnership within the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) division.
“This year we collaborated with Alliance Gardens, Science Club and Math Club, because now all of our programs are on one floor,” Noseworthy said. “The school of STEM is together now.”
Bridget Hemstock, a member of Math Club, enjoyed the collaboration.
“I think it’s a really cool idea to have different STEM fields integrated for these events, because there’s a lot of likemindeness between the different fields,” Hemstock said.
The Math Club showed attendees how to fold origami to add to their wreaths, and the Science Club provided Petri dishes to be used as ornaments.
Arie Hackett, Vice President of Math Club, said, “We thought origami would be a good way to add geometry to the wreaths.”
Both clubs emphasized that students who are not a part of science or math majors can still be involved.
“I really want people to feel like sciences are for everybody, and these events are for anybody, just a fun time to get together,” Noseworthy said.
“We are the Science Club, but we’re not just science majors,” Smith said.
The Science Club and Math Club plan to host more events in the future with the hope that students will continue to be involved in STEM.
