McConn Coffee Company has had another successful year so far at Indiana Wesleyan University.
McConn Marketing Manager Mary Sebbas said this year McConn has hosted events like McHalloween, Public House, the Res Hall Brew Battle and weekly Cremas, all aimed at creating a space for connection.
“The purpose of these events is to invite IWU students and community members to be a part of the culture of McConn,” Sebbas said. “Our motto is ‘first a place of love, second a place of coffee.’”
She also said her focus this year has been to build both community and culture at McConn.
“We have diverse perspectives of people on staff, and it has been special to create a space of connection on and off shift,” she said. “I hope to make McConn for others what it has been for me – a safe community that gives a break from the stress of school.”
Junior Faith Brown said McConn’s culture is something that has made her experience at IWU better.
“It’s a central and communal space where I see people constantly,” Brown said. “It also just has a cozy feel that makes it easy to just sit and have a drink with someone after a long day”
She also said Crema, McConn’s open mic event, is an opportunity to build community.
“It’s an awesome chance to see people you’ve never seen before and hear people sing for the first time,” Brown said. “I’ve met many friends simply by being there.”
Junior Graham Goodfellow enjoys McConn’s social atmosphere.
“I enjoy getting drinks from McConn and talking to my friends there,” Goodfellow said. “It’s the perfect place to relax and chat.”
Looking ahead, Sebbas said she is excited for future events.
“My hope for these events is that we can create space for people,” Sebbas said. “It’s important that McConn is a place where people can slow down from the chaos of being a student.”
